SPIRIT MUSIC NASHVILLE
In July of 2015, Spirit Music Group announced its acquisition of Cal IV Entertainment -- the established and successful Nashville-based independent music publisher, production, and artist management company. The move marked Spirit’s first official presence on Music Row, bringing top writers, artists, and staff into the fold along with 25 number one copyrights and top ten singles. Through the deal, Spirit became the publisher of an active writer roster including hit-makers Eric Paslay, Jim Collins and Rose Falcon. In addition, Spirit acquired the publishing rights to number one copyrights and numerous top ten singles including such hits as Faith Hill’s “Breathe”, Keith Urban’s “Stupid Boy", Tim McGraw’s “Watch The Wind Blow By”, and Jason Aldean’s “Big Green Tractor", as well as an extensive catalog of songs by former Cal IV writers such as Dave Berg (Billboard’s 2007 Country Songwriter of the Year, NSAI’s 2007 Songwriter of the Year, ASCAP’s 2008 Country Songwriter of the Year), Jim McBride, Odie Blackmon, Marla Cannon-Goodman, Trent Tomlinson, Holly Lamar, Georgia Middleman (Blue Sky Riders with Kenny Loggins and Gary Burr) and Ted Russell Kamp (Shooter Jennings), among many others.
Spirit next acquired the StyleSonic catalog, bringing another four No. 1 country hits to its portfolio as well as over fifteen Top 20 country songs spanning the last decade. The StyleSonic catalog includes some of today’s most popular songs in country music recorded by Nashville stars such as Tim McGraw, Dierks Bentley, Taylor Swift, and Martina McBride, to name a few.
In January 2016, Spirit continued to expand its footprint in the country music space by striking a multi-faceted agreement with Nashville hit producer, songwriter, and publishing executive, Frank Rogers (who has won Music Row’s Producer of the Year award three times). Through the agreement, Spirit acquired Rogers’ interest in copyrights of the respected Nashville publisher Sea Gayle Music which was named ASCAP Country Music Awards Publisher of the Year in 2010 and 2011, and features a catalog of 40 No. 1 hits along with an impressive roster of artists and writers. Rogers also formed a JV with Spirit, joined the company roster as a songwriter and bringing new talent to the company.
In 2015, Spirit acquired the music publishing assets of West Main Music, a leading independent Christian/Contemporary Praise & Worship publishing entity. The West Main song catalog features leading Christian music songwriters, including Jason Ingram (SESAC’s 2007 Christian Songwriter of the Year award recipient, co-writer of Bebo Norman’s “I Will Lift My Eyes,” Salvador’s “Shine,” Chris Tomlin’s “White Flag,” and member of One Sonic Society); Stuart Garrad (Stu G, Delirious?, and One Sonic Society); and Paul Mabury (One Sonic Society, noted Hillsong UNITED drummer), to name a few. The company’s assets in the Christian/gospel sector include a catalog made up of some of the most significant Christian Worship songs and Christian Contemporary hits, including “Forever Reign” a contemporary Christian worship song originally by the collective One Sonic Society and Hillsong which has gone on to be covered by several artists; “Never Once” co-written by Jason Ingram and recorded by Matt Redman; and “Help Me Find It” co-written by Jason Ingram and recorded by The Sidewalk Prophets.
Spirit Music Group continued its aggressive global expansion in August 2015 by partnering with B Unique (home of James Bay and John Newman) and establishing a UK presence with the opening of a new London-based office, operating as Spirit B-Unique. The creation of Spirit B-Unique was the product of a multi-faceted deal with B-Unique founders Martin Toher and Mark Lewis, who were named Co-President of Spirit B-Unique and brought into the fold a number of globally successful artists and songwriters, including James Bay, John Newman, Kodaline, and Jonny Coffer. The partnership will included such top hits as: “Hold Back The River” and “Let It Go” by James Bay; “Blame” by Calvin Harris featuring John Newman; “Feel The Love” by Rudimental featuring John Newman; “All I Want” and “The One” by Kodaline; “LA LA LA” by Naughty Boy (via Jonny Coffer); “Heart Skips a Beat” by Olly Murs (via Sam Preston); “Love Me Again” by John Newman; “Hey Baby” by No Doubt (via Rodney Price); “The Age of Understatement” by Last Shadow Puppets (via Miles Kane); and “Cecilia and the Satellite” by Andrew McMahon (via James Flannigan and Anders Grahn).
Spirit B-Unique made quick impact with a string of new signings and renewals, including deals with John Newman, Tim Deal and Stephanie Rainey. The acquisition of Polar Patrol publishing soon followed along with its catalog of successful songs written by Snow Patrol, Belle and Sebastian, and Ed Sheeran co-writer Johnny McDaid.
